Nurturing Social-Emotional Learning: Essential Tools for Your SEL Kit

“I am planning to introduce two new initiatives at our organization – the Peace Path and the Chill Zone. The Peace Path will be aimed at older kids, providing them with a platform to express their feelings and discuss what is bothering them with their peers, instead of bottling it up or resorting to aggressive behavior. The Chill Zone, on the other hand, will be a dedicated space for kids to go to when they are upset, with calming tools provided to help them regulate their emotions. I am eagerly looking forward to implementing both these initiatives.” – 5/22/2018

Course Purpose: The purpose of this course is to provide educators and out-of-school time professionals tools, ideas and activities to bring to their programs that their students can benefit from. You will walk away with at least one or two new ideas to integrate SEL tomorrow into your programs.

Target Audience: We have designed this online course for out-of-school time professionals in before and after school, summer camps, school age or recreation programs.

Course Description: How much time do you spend helping young people understand their emotions, recognizing a friend’s perspective, resolving conflict in a positive way, and helping them make safe choices? In this course you will discover the why and how of bringing social emotional learning (SEL) to your program. Create peace paths, cool down areas, and embrace group meeting times to give kids a better chance of understanding themselves and building relationships with others.

The National AfterSchool Association has created a webinar course to inspire out-of-school professionals to make their programs a place for meaningful youth engagement and voice. This course will provide you with ideas to implement and the confidence to provide Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) opportunities to your students, which will help them succeed in the future. The presenter of this webinar is Jamie Garcia, Operations Director for Extend-A-Care Kids in Austin, Texas. She has also served on the NAA board of directors and is passionate about integrating SEL into daily programming.
